An 87-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
The conviction was secured by the Tesano Divisional Police Command.
According to a press release from the Accra Regional Police Command dated 12th October, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent Ms. Juliana Obeng, the convict, Yaw Gahornu, was found guilty of repeated sexual abuse of the minor between July and August 2026.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on 29th August, 2026, the victim’s mother returned from work and noticed bloodstains on her daughter’s clothing. Upon questioning, the child disclosed that the accused had subjected her to repeated sexual abuse.
Police say further investigations showed the suspect allegedly lured the child to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse to her mother.
The matter came to light on 31st August, 2026, after it was reportedly witnessed by the accused person’s granddaughter, who informed family members including the complainant. The case was subsequently reported to the Police.
Yaw Gahornu was charged and arraigned before the Gender-Based Violence Court at the DOVVSU Headquarters, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour for the offence of defilement.
The Accra Regional Police Command has welcomed the outcome and reiterated its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons.
The Command urged the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the Police for investigation and appropriate action.
