Six offences in 24 months will cost you your licence – New Road Traffic Regulations

Accra
Drivers who commit six traffic offences within a 24-month period will have their licences revoked for at least one year under the new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).
According to Regulation (14) of L.I. 2519, where a person commits a sixth offence within twenty-four months of the first offence, the court shall, on summary conviction, make an order for
(a) the revocation, suspension or cancellation of the driver’s licence for a period of not less than twelve months;
(b) re-training at the designated training centre; and
(c) re-testing of the person by the Licensing Authority before a new driver’s licence is issued.
The Regulation also empowers the police to bypass automated fines for serious offences.
Sub-regulation (15) provides that despite the provision for automated fines, a police officer may, having regard to the seriousness of an offence, process a person for court without the option of an automated fine.
A person processed for court under that provision is liable on summary conviction to the respective penalty specified in the Regulations [Sub-regulation 16].
The L.I. further clarifies that despite any fine provided in the Regulations, a person who violates a speed limit specified in the Thirteenth Schedule is liable to the fine specified in that Schedule [Sub-regulation 17].
The new L.I., which is currently before Parliament, seeks to tighten enforcement and curb repeat traffic violations on Ghana’s roads.
