The Minority and Majority Chief Whips, Hon. Frank Annoh Dompreh and Hon. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, have called for an amendment of the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act, 1958 (Act 42), to remove the exemption granted to government-owned vehicles from compulsory third-party insurance.

In a joint statement presented to Parliament, the Chief Whips raised concerns about the lack of insurance coverage for government vehicles and the difficulties victims of road accidents face in securing compensation.

They called on the Government to ensure that Ministries, Departments and Agencies insure their vehicle fleets and make provision for the premiums in the 2027 Budget.

The First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, who was presiding, subsequently referred the statements to the Attorney-General, Hon. Dominic Ayine, and Minister for Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, to consider amending the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act.
