A rescue operation is underway at Adentan New Site in Accra after a one-storey residential building gave way during a heavy downpour on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. So far, four occupants have been rescued alive, but emergency teams say one woman remains trapped under the debris.

The Ghana National Fire Service, GNFS, confirmed the collapse happened after several hours of continuous rainfall. The building, which had apartments on both the ground and first floor, came down near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket in the community.

According to GNFS, community members acted quickly and pulled two injured residents from the wreckage before firefighters arrived. Those two were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Firefighters who later arrived at the scene worked through the rubble and rescued two more injured victims, bringing the total number of survivors to four.

All four rescued persons are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. GNFS says their condition is being monitored by medical staff.

Earlier reports had suggested one of the rescued victims had died. However, the Fire Service says it has not confirmed any deaths from the incident. Officials are urging the public to rely on verified updates as the rescue continues.

GNFS says five people were believed to be inside the building when it collapsed. That number included two women and three males. Among them were three children – one girl and two boys. With four already rescued, firefighters are now focused on locating the remaining occupant, a woman believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams are using specialized equipment to carefully remove debris while avoiding further collapse.

In a small relief during the operation, a dog that was also trapped inside the building was found and rescued alive by the response team.GNFS commends community, other agencies

The Fire Service praised residents of Adentan New Site for their quick response. “Two of the victims were rescued by community members before our personnel arrived,” GNFS stated. The Service also acknowledged support from other emergency and security agencies working at the scene.

The collapse adds to growing concerns about building safety during Ghana’s rainy season. Heavy rains often expose weak structures, poor drainage, and unauthorized construction. Adentan and other low-lying areas in Accra are particularly vulnerable when the rains last for hours.

Investigations into what caused this specific building to collapse are expected to begin once the rescue operation is complete. GNFS has advised residents in flood-prone and old buildings to be cautious and report structural weaknesses to authorities before the rains worsen.

Rescue efforts were still ongoing at the time of filing this report.
