Berekum residents to stage another demo over galamsey on Tuesday

Bono Region, 10th August 2026
Residents of Berekum East and West municipalities in the Bono Region are set to hit the streets again on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, to protest illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

This will be the second demonstration by the communities after an earlier protest and petitions to authorities failed to produce what they describe as “meaningful action” to stop the destruction.
The demonstrators say illegal mining continues to devastate their farmlands and pollute water bodies, threatening livelihoods and public health in both municipalities.
Organizers of the protest say they are demanding immediate and decisive government intervention to halt galamsey operations and restore degraded lands and water sources in the area.
They have vowed to continue with such actions until concrete steps are taken to address the menace.

Authorities in the Bono Region are yet to comment on security arrangements for the planned demonstration.
