Diplomatic tension brews between Ghana and South Africa over evacuation “drama”
Accra, Ghana
Diplomatic relations between Ghana and South Africa are under strain following a warning from Pretoria over what it described as “drama” surrounding the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa.
The warning comes amid reports of delays and poor coordination in repatriating Ghanaians who cited economic hardship and xenophobic attacks as reasons for returning home. South African officials have expressed concern over how the process is being handled, accusing Ghana of politicizing the evacuation.345 Ghanaians Return Home
This is the second batch of returnees in recent weeks. Over 345 Ghanaians arrived at Kotoka International Airport recently under a voluntary repatriation program. The returnees said they left South Africa due to job losses and rising anti-foreigner sentiment.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is expected to issue an official response to calm tensions and protect bilateral ties. Analysts say both countries must prioritize diplomatic dialogue to avoid damaging trade, education, and migration agreements that benefit citizens of both nations.
The incident adds to ongoing discussions about the treatment of African migrants and the need for stronger regional cooperation through ECOWAS and AU frameworks.
Government officials from both sides are expected to meet in the coming days to resolve the dispute and streamline future evacuation processes.
