Samson Lardy accuses Mahama & NDC of nurturing “monster” of Misinformation
Private Legal Practitioner and Journalist, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has accused President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC of “nurturing a monster” of misinformation and insults in Ghana’s political space.
Speaking on JoyNews, Mr. Anyenini said political actors within the ruling party have created an environment where falsehoods, personal attacks, and propaganda thrive unchecked. He argued that instead of promoting issue-based discourse, some communicators and party faithful are being encouraged to spread unverified claims and attack opponents and institutions.
He specifically called out the tone of political commentary on social media and in party-aligned media, saying it is damaging to democracy and public trust. “When you nurture a monster, it eventually turns on you,” he warned, urging the President and NDC leadership to rein in their communicators and set a better example.
Mr. Anyenini also stressed the need for media literacy, fact-checking, and accountability from both government and opposition. He said misinformation is not just a political problem but a national security threat, because it can incite tension, undermine elections, and erode confidence in state institutions.
The comments come at a time when the government is pushing several major policy initiatives, including the mid-year budget review, mining reforms, and social interventions. Critics of the administration have accused it of failing to communicate clearly, while government communicators accuse the opposition of spreading lies.
The NDC has not officially responded to Mr. Anyenini’s remarks. However, some party communicators have defended their approach as “holding the opposition accountable.” Political analysts say the debate highlights a wider problem in Ghanaian politics where misinformation is increasingly used as a campaign tool by all sides.
Mr. Anyenini concluded by calling on civil society, the media, and citizens to reject insults and demand facts, policies, and performance from all political actors ahead of future elections.
