NPP directs Greater Accra aspirants to suspend campaign for “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all aspirants campaigning in the Greater Accra Region to temporarily suspend their campaign activities and mobilize for a planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday.
In a statement dated August 4, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the directive was issued by the National Steering Committee. According to the release, all aspirants currently campaigning across Greater Accra are to pause their activities on August 5 and 6, 2026, and instead focus on mobilizing support for the demonstration.
The statement also tasked Regional, Constituency, and Polling Station Executives in Greater Accra to work closely to ensure maximum turnout for the event.
The “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 5:00 a.m., with the assembly point set at the Supreme Court in Accra.
The party urged all members, supporters, and the general public to remain “peaceful, disciplined, and orderly” throughout the demonstration.
The NPP did not specify the immediate trigger for the protest in the statement, but described the action as part of efforts to defend democratic principles.
The directive comes as political parties intensify grassroots activities ahead of upcoming internal and national elections. Party faithful across Greater Accra are expected to converge at the Supreme Court early Thursday morning for the protest march.
