GES bans unauthorised fees in SHS/SHTS — orders immediate refund
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all heads of Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools (SHS/SHTS) to immediately stop the collection of admission fees, PTA dues and other unauthorised fees from parents and guardians.
In a press release dated 23rd September 2026 with reference GES/HQ/PR/26/157, signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, management said it has received with concern reports that some heads are collecting such fees.
Key directives:
1. All heads must cease collection of unauthorised fees with immediate effect.
2. No student or parent should be compelled directly or indirectly to pay admission fees, PTA dues or any other unauthorised fee as a condition for admission, enrolment, participation in activities or access to school services.
3. The collection of such fees is contrary to government policy on free education at the SHS level.
4. On PTA dues, GES says the matter is still pending in court, and until determined, all discussions and collection of PTA dues remain on hold.
5. Heads who have already collected such fees must refund them and present evidence of refund to GES Management.
6. Any head who flouts the directive will face administrative sanctions, including removal from office.
7. The public is encouraged to report any such cases to GES for prompt action.
