About 12 people have been confirmed dead, and two others are receiving medical attention following a collision between a commercial minibus and a trailer at Akomadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the Offinso North District Assembly.

According to the Akomadan District Police Commander, DSP Paul Boabeng Donkor, the minibus was traveling from Kumasi to Wenchi for the Eid celebration, while the trailer was traveling from Techiman to Kumasi. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the minibus attempted to overtake another vehicle and entered the path of the oncoming trailer.

Medical Superintendent at the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital, Dr. Samuel Freeman Mensah, confirmed that 11 passengers were pronounced dead on arrival at the facility. One additional passenger passed away while being transferred to a facility in Techiman for further care. Two survivors remain in stable condition and are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Dr. Mensah said families have begun arriving to identify relatives and urged members of the public with loved ones who were traveling to Wenchi for Eid to visit the hospital. The bodies have been transferred to the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital morgue for identification and preservation.

Police have removed the damaged vehicles from the road to restore traffic flow and have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Authorities have used the incident to reiterate calls for road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution, particularly when overtaking.
