Bawumia Visits Detained NPP Chairman As Legal Fights and Free Speech Case Dominate Politics
Politics was dominated yesterday, July 22, by two linked legal stories involving the NPP and free speech.
The NPP flagbearer led a delegation of MPs to visit the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, who is currently in detention at Nsawam Prison over an ongoing case linked to EXIM Bank.
The party has described him as a ‘Political Prisoner’ and says the detention is politically motivated. In court, the Attorney General rejected a GH¢30m plea bargain offer from the detained chairman. The party has also launched a legal challenge against a reported 20-year sentence related to the case.
In a separate but related development, Police arrested an NDC organizer and TikToker over alleged insults made online against the former Vice President. The arrest sparked debate about free speech and the use of cyber laws.
In a surprising move, the former Vice President publicly said he has forgiven the organizer and has called on the Attorney General and Police to discontinue the case. He argued that political discourse should not lead to jail time.
The two cases together have energized the NPP base, who see them as evidence of selective justice ahead of the 2028 elections. Government has not commented publicly today, but the issue took up significant time in Parliamentary discussions around the budget.
