GES given one week to prepare for rollout of new KG–P6 Curriculum with Coding, AI and Ethics
The Ministry of Education has tasked the Ghana Education Service with a 7-day deadline to get ready for the full rollout of the revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Primary Six.
The directive came after the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, NaCCA, officially presented the updated curriculum to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
According to the Minister, the focus is now shifting from policy papers to actual classroom delivery. He said technical checks and quality assurance will be key to making the new subjects work.
“I have referred the revised curriculum to GES,” Mr. Iddrisu told journalists. “GES has one week from today to review it and ensure it is fully ready for implementation and meets strict quality standards. As the operational agency, GES must take ownership early so that execution in the classroom is smooth and policy aligns with what happens on the ground.”
The new curriculum brings in major changes. Pupils from KG to Primary 6 will now be introduced to coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, ethics, and TVET subjects. NaCCA Director-General, Samuel Ofori Obuobisah Bekoe, explained that the review also strengthens civic education. The goal is to equip learners with knowledge and skills to become responsible citizens.
Moral and ethical education has been built into the lessons. For coding, Mr. Bekoe said computing and mathematics will be used as the base. He stressed that the aim is not to turn basic school pupils into experts, but to spark interest early.
“Whatever skills they acquire, whether jewelry making or coding, they will do the practical thing,” he said. “It’s to build their interest first and give them the foundation, so when they get to higher levels they better understand what they started with.”
Chinese has also been proposed as an optional subject under the new curriculum.
The Ministry says the one-week GES review is to ensure teachers, materials, and systems are ready before teaching begins.
