DVLA to roll out new number plates in less than a month – CEO
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will roll out new vehicle number plates nationwide in less than a month, the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer has announced.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the newly commissioned DVLA Ultra Center at Dome, the CEO said the new plates are part of a broader modernization drive to improve vehicle identification, reduce fraud, and enhance road safety.
“The new number plates come with enhanced security features including holograms, QR codes, and reflective materials that meet international standards,” the CEO stated. “We expect the rollout to begin within the next three to four weeks.”
He added that the DVLA has completed pilot testing and staff training ahead of the national deployment. Existing vehicle owners will be given a transition period to replace their old plates.
The announcement comes as the Authority opens more service centers to reduce congestion. The new Dome Ultra Center, commissioned on Friday, is expected to serve residents in Accra’s northern suburbs with faster processing of driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, and roadworthy certificates.
In a related development, the Tano South Municipal Chief Executive has inspected a site earmarked for a permanent DVLA office in Bechem. The MCE said the facility will bring licensing services closer to residents in the Ahafo Region and reduce travel time to Kumasi.
Transport experts have welcomed the reforms, saying a centralized and secure plate system will help law enforcement track stolen vehicles and improve revenue collection.
The DVLA says it will embark on a public education campaign to inform vehicle owners about the new plates, cost, and replacement process. The Authority urged the public to avoid middlemen and patronize only accredited DVLA offices.
