Nationwide Dumsor: GRIDCo reports power system disturbance, restoration underway

The Ghana Grid Company Limited, GRIDCo, has confirmed that the country experienced a major power system disturbance in the early hours of Wednesday, 29th July 2026, resulting in the interruption of electricity supply to parts of the national grid.
According to a press statement released by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section in Tema, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. The disturbance affected the National Interconnected Transmission System and triggered the simultaneous tripping of several generating plants across the country. The cascading effect led to a widespread disruption in power supply.
GRIDCo explained that the tripping of multiple plants at the same time placed significant strain on the transmission network, forcing protective systems to activate in order to safeguard equipment and prevent further damage. As a result, many homes and businesses experienced an unplanned outage.
In response, GRIDCo said it has immediately activated its established system restoration procedures. Engineers and system operators are currently working around the clock to bring power back online. The company noted that restoration efforts are being carried out in close collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector, including power generators and distribution utilities.
“GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety,” the statement read.
Alongside restoration, GRIDCo has also launched a comprehensive technical investigation to determine the precise cause of the disturbance. The company said identifying the root cause is critical to preventing a recurrence and ensuring the stability of the national grid going forward.
GRIDCo acknowledged the inconvenience caused to customers and appealed for patience and understanding as work continues. It assured the public of its commitment to restoring electricity supply to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible. The company also promised to provide further updates as more information becomes available from the ongoing investigation.
GRIDCo, incorporated in December 2006, is responsible for the economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities across Ghana. The company operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and currently transmits power to 31 bulk customers from 11 wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority.
The latest outage comes at a time when stakeholders continue to call for improved resilience in Ghana’s power infrastructure. GRIDCo has reiterated that safety remains its top priority during the restoration process.
