Two VIP JEOUN coaches targeted in armed robbery attacks on Accra-Kumasi and Kumasi-Sunyani highways

VIP JEOUN Transport Company Limited has confirmed that two of its coaches were attacked by armed robbers in separate incidents on the night of Wednesday, July 30, 2026, leaving five people injured and raising fresh concerns about highway security in the Eastern and Ashanti Regions.
According to a press release issued by the company’s management on Friday, July 31, the first attack occurred at 23:00 hours GMT on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, specifically on a stretch between Apedwa Junction via Nkronso, Akooko and Akyem Asafo.
Management said armed robbers used a vehicle to block the highway and engaged in acts of banditry. Three VIP JEOU N coaches traveling on the route were caught up in the blockade. The assailants opened fire repeatedly on one of the coaches that was en route from Accra to Sunyani. The shooting left five people injured. Those hurt include the driver, the driver’s mate, and three passengers.
The company stated that the driver sustained serious injuries and has since been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for further treatment. The condition of the other victims was not disclosed.
Police officers from Suhum in the Eastern South Region responded swiftly to the scene. According to the release, they successfully repelled the robbers, cleared the blockade, and reopened the highway to traffic.
Second Attack Hours Later
In a second incident just two hours later, another VIP JEOU N coach was targeted at around 01:00 hours GMT at Potrikrom, on the Kumasi to Sunyani Highway.
The release stated that armed robbers shot at the coach and damaged its windshield. However, unlike the first attack, this coach was under armed escort. The escort team engaged the attackers and repelled them before they could board or rob passengers. No passenger or crew member was injured in this incident. A police patrol team also arrived at the scene shortly after.
Company Response
VIP JEOU N said it is “deeply concerned” about the incidents and is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to ensure the perpetrators are arrested.
“VIP JEOUN values the security of passengers and crew on board and are committed to ensuring hassle-free transportation,” the management stated in the release. The company did not indicate whether it would adjust night schedules or increase security measures, but emphasized its cooperation with law enforcement.
The attacks come amid growing public anxiety over armed robbery on major intercity routes, particularly at night. Passengers and transport unions have repeatedly called for increased police patrols and the use of armed escorts on long-distance journeys
The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the two attacks. Investigations are ongoing.
