Sudan, Gaza crises demand urgent global action — Pres Mahama
Belgrade, Serbia —
President John Dramani Mahama has called for urgent and sustained global action to end the humanitarian crises in Sudan and Gaza, warning that the credibility of the international system is being tested by silence and selectivity.
He made the call at the 65th Anniversary Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Belgrade, Serbia, on September 1, 2026.
President Mahama described Sudan as facing one of the world’s largest and worst humanitarian crises, with over 12 million people displaced, widespread hunger, and grave violations against civilians.
“In Sudan, the world has too often appeared to turn its back on the people who are enduring the world’s largest and worst humanitarian crisis,” President Mahama said.
“The international community must give Sudan the sustained political attention, humanitarian support and commitment to peace that its people urgently deserve.
“On Gaza, the President said the humanitarian situation remains catastrophic.
“Civilians continue to face severe constraints on humanitarian access and critical shortages affecting food, water, health care and electricity,” he said.
“We must insist on the protection of civilians and full and unhindered humanitarian access. We also reject the selective application of the principles of the United Nations Charter.
“President Mahama said the global order cannot be built on double standards.
“The credibility of the international system is tested most severely when human suffering is met with silence, selectivity, or indifference. Sovereignty cannot be defended selectively, and international law cannot retain its authority if its application depends on political circumstance,” he said.
He also reiterated Ghana’s long-standing call for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba, describing unilateral coercive measures as violations of the UN Charter.
The President further urged NAM member states to push for resource sovereignty, reform of the global financial architecture, and united action on climate change and artificial intelligence.
