Foreign Minister faces call for sack, censure or resignation over alleged Evacuation Irregularities

Accra – The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate resignation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over alleged irregularities in the GH¢49.7 million South Africa evacuation exercise.

The demand was led by the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor.

The Minority accuses the Minister of superintending over financial irregularities in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, an exercise which cost the state GH¢49.7 million.

According to the Minority, the scandal has badly damaged the credibility of Mr. Ablakwa, who also chairs the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee, the government body tasked with recovering looted state assets.

The Minority argues that the Minister has no moral justification to continue in office and has given the government three options: for the Minister to resign, be sacked by the President, or be censured by Parliament.

The group insists that the alleged irregularities surrounding the GH¢49.7 million expenditure cannot be overlooked, especially at a time when the government has pledged commitment to accountability and judicious use of public funds.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to officially respond to the allegations and the calls for the Minister’s resignation.
