Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has held a series of high-level meetings in Japan with key state institutions, universities and international organisations, as part of his delegation’s working visit to Tokyo.

In a statement, Dr. Bawumia said the meetings over the last couple of days were insightful and fruitful, and thanked all hosts for their hospitality, participation and valuable insights.

The delegation first met officials of the Central Bank of Japan, where discussions focused on monetary policy, the central bank digital currency (CBDC) and payment systems.

The team also met Japan’s Digital Agency, the equivalent of Ghana.Gov, to discuss digital government, public service delivery and the use of technology to improve state efficiency.

At Chiba University, the delegation discussed vaccine research and manufacturing, an area of growing interest for Ghana as it seeks to build local capacity in health security and pharmaceutical production.

The delegation further met officials of the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to discuss flood control and river management, a critical issue for Ghana amid perennial flooding in Accra and other parts of the country.

Meetings were also held with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, where discussions centred on metals and energy security, and with UNIDO Japan to discuss industrial policy in Japan and other countries.

The delegation concluded its engagements with a meeting with the Chairman of the Research Committee on International Affairs and Member of the House of Councillors, National Diet of Japan (Parliament), to discuss international affairs and parliamentary cooperation.

Dr. Bawumia said the engagements offered valuable lessons for Ghana, particularly in digital transformation, monetary innovation, industrial development and infrastructure resilience.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen Ghana-Japan cooperation and to draw on Japan’s experience in technology, manufacturing and public sector reform.
