4 suspects arrested over kidnapping and torture of 30-year-old man at Breman UGC
ASSIN FOSU —
The Central North Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects for kidnapping, torturing and extorting a 30-year-old man, Bismarck Amo, who was held hostage for six days.
The suspects are Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng alias Culture — both teachers of Kumasi Girls SHS; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard; and Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician. All are residents of Breman UGC.
The arrest was made under an intelligence-led operation code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators,” coordinated by IGP Christian Tetteh Yohonu and led by Regional Commander DCOP Abraham Acquaye.
Facts of the Case
According to Police, on September 3, 2026, the victim allegedly defrauded suspect Mavis Badu Acheampong.
Mavis allegedly connived with her husband — a senior military officer currently outside the country — to lure the victim from Assin Fosu to Kumasi via phone.
Upon his arrival, she and accomplices kidnapped him and held him hostage at her private residence from September 6 to 11, 2026.
While in captivity, the victim was subjected to severe torture, which was filmed and sent to his family.
The syndicate demanded GH¢45,000 ransom and extorted GH¢19,500 via mobile money before police intervention. They were demanding an additional GH¢30,500 under threat of killing him.
To avoid tracking, they used their own phones to contact the family.
Rescue
The family reported the case to the Regional CID in Assin Fosu on September 8 after paying the GH¢19,500 but the victim was still held.
On September 11, as the police net closed in, the suspects attempted to move the victim to a new location. Tactical teams intercepted them mid-transit and rescued the victim, who was found partially unconscious, drenched in blood and covered in bruises.
He is currently admitted under police escort, receiving urgent treatment.
Police Action
All four suspects are locked in tight custody and are being processed for court. Police say a manhunt is actively underway for the senior military officer involved and all other accomplices at large.
The Police Administration cautioned that taking the law into one’s own hands, no matter the provocation or financial loss, is a severe crime that will be met with the heaviest response from the law.
