Impounded courier bikes to be released only after payment of fines

The Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has explained that motorbikes impounded during its enforcement operations will only be released after their owners pay the required penalties and complete the licensing process.

According to the Commission, riders operating without valid licences issued by the regulator are liable to fines under the law establishing the agency.

This follows an operation in Accra where nearly 100 unlicensed motorbike couriers were impounded. The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enforce earlier directives requiring courier operators to register, obtain licences, and be integrated into the national courier management system.

Speaking on the issue on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, April 21, the Public Relations Manager of the Commission, Edwin Nii Yeboah Burgesson, said offenders must pay penalties before their motorbikes can be returned, after which they are guided to regularise their operations.

He explained that the ongoing enforcement exercise aims to ensure that all courier and delivery riders operate within the approved regulatory framework.

Mr. Burgesson noted that the Commission will continue carrying out unannounced enforcement operations in various locations to ensure compliance.

He added that the exercise is being conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to support the administrative process and maintain order in the sector.

“Per the act that establishes the commission, when your bike is impounded for operating without a licence issued by the commission, there is a fine, and there is a penalty that you pay. So those who want to have their bikes back make that payment, and they are taken through the processes to regularise their activity…We will continue with these enforcement programmes at unannounced places.”
