Government releases GH₵76.4 million for Black Stars 2026 World Cup campaign

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, has authorized the release of Seventy-Six Million, Four Hundred and Sixty-Six Thousand, Nine Hundred and Nineteen Ghana Cedis and Twenty Pesewas GH₵76,466,919.20 to support the senior national football team, the Black Stars, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The funds are split into two key disbursements to cover tournament preparations and outstanding player bonuses as the competition takes place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

GH₵58.9M Advance For Preparations And Group Stages

The government released Fifty-Eight Million, Nine Hundred and Twenty-Nine Thousand, Five Hundred Ghana Cedis GH₵58,929,500.00, equivalent to US $5,000,000.00, as an advance payment.

The advance is earmarked for Black Stars preparations and to cover costs associated with the team’s participation in the group stages of the World Cup. This includes training camps, logistics, accommodation, and technical support.

The Ministry described the proactive funding as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to equip the team with resources needed to compete at the highest level and make Ghana proud on the global stage.

GH₵17.5M To Settle Outstanding Qualification Bonuses

Additionally, Seventeen Million, Five Hundred and Thirty-Seven Thousand, Four Hundred and Nineteen Ghana Cedis and Twenty Pesewas GH₵17,537,419.20, equivalent to US $1,488,000.00, was released to settle outstanding bonuses owed to players and technical staff.

These payments fulfill a performance-based agreement from the qualifying series. Under that arrangement, the team received 50% of their bonuses during qualifiers, with the remaining 50% contingent on successfully qualifying for the tournament. Clearing the arrears is expected to boost morale and allow the technical team and players to focus fully on delivering results.

Government Pledges Continued Support For Sports

The Ministry of Finance stated that the government remains steadfast in its support for the Black Stars and the broader development of sports in Ghana. Officials believe the timely release of funds will provide the stability and motivation needed for success.

“We call on all Ghanaians to continue to offer their unwavering support to the Black Stars as they embark on this prestigious journey to the World Cup,” the statement added.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition expanded to 48 teams and co-hosted by three nations, making it the largest World Cup in history.
