PEKI, Volta Region

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday inspected progress on the construction of a new 1,500-capacity multipurpose assembly hall at Peki College of Education, reaffirming the government’s commitment to completing stalled educational infrastructure across the country.

The President said the project was initiated during his previous administration alongside a girls’ hostel, which has since been completed and is in use by students. He expressed satisfaction that work has resumed on the auditorium after years of inactivity, describing it as a critical investment in teacher education.

“I am happy to see work progressing on this facility,” President Mahama said. “This modern assembly hall will provide a conducive space for academic, social and institutional activities, and it will significantly enhance the learning environment on campus.”

According to him, the project is nearing completion. The final major component will be the delivery and installation of furniture, which he said has been arranged to arrive within the month. The facility will be officially commissioned once that is done.

Focus on teacher recruitment and infrastructure

Speaking to students and trainee teachers, President Mahama also announced that government clearance has been granted for the recruitment of at least 16,000 newly trained teachers and graduates from colleges of education. The move, he explained, is part of efforts to clear the backlog of trained professionals awaiting placement and to address staffing needs in schools nationwide.

The President further reiterated the government’s resolve to improve conditions in colleges of education through targeted investments in infrastructure, student accommodation, and other essential facilities aimed at strengthening teaching and learning outcomes.

He urged students to remain dedicated to their studies.

“Ghana’s future depends on a well-trained, skilled and motivated generation of young professionals,” he said.

The Peki College of Education assembly hall is one of several projects the government says it is prioritizing to modernize teacher training institutions and improve the quality of education delivery.
