The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Government of Ghana in making the Weija Paediatric Hospital fully operational.

The 120-bed facility was built and equipped under the World Bank’s COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness and Response Project (P173788) for US$10.15 million.

According to the Bank, the project officially closed on December 16, 2025, after receiving a six-month extension to complete activities delayed by challenges with government counterpart funding.

The World Bank stated that some components were still incomplete at the time of closure. These included final installations at the Weija facility and selected safety measures required under its Environmental and Social Framework for health infrastructure projects.

In a statement dated May 25, 2026, the Bank said that after closure, the government may use undisbursed IDA funds under the project to pay outstanding obligations for IDA-eligible activities until June 16, 2025.

The Bank noted that the government is responsible for mobilizing its own resources to complete outstanding environmental and social safeguard requirements and to cover any expenditures not eligible under IDA financing.

It added that full operationalization of the hospital will depend on completing the remaining works and deploying the required staff. The World Bank said it continues to engage with the government to support the process.
