NPP mobilizes for major demonstration over Sedina Tamakloe acquittal

The New Patriotic Party is preparing to hit the streets in a major demonstration following the acquittal of Sedina Tamakloe, a case that has reignited political tensions between the NPP and the ruling government.
Party executives addressed the media on Monday, expressing dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and accusing the justice system of political interference. According to NPP officials, the acquittal undermines accountability and sends the wrong signal ahead of the 2028 elections.
The demonstration, party leaders say, will be used to demand “justice, fairness, and the rule of law.” While the date and routes have not been fully announced, organizers say the protest will mobilize members from across all 16 regions.
Speaking at the press briefing, a senior NPP official cited the need for the party to remain united in the face of what they described as attempts to weaken the opposition. The party also used the opportunity to reflect on its performance in the 2016 elections, with former National Chairman Paul Afoko calling for unity within the NPP. Afoko said his experience and role in the 2016 victory should be leveraged to bring the party together ahead of future contests.
Political analysts say the planned protest could become one of the biggest opposition mobilizations this year. The NPP has in recent months accused the government of selective justice and the misuse of state institutions.
The Attorney General’s office has not commented on the acquittal, but sources within government say the case was decided purely on legal merit.
Security analysts have called on both the police and protest organizers to ensure the demonstration remains peaceful. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it will provide adequate security and manage traffic disruptions.
The Sedina Tamakloe case has dominated headlines for months, with the NPP arguing that it was a test of the country’s commitment to fighting corruption. With 2028 approaching, the party appears to be using the issue to re-energize its base.
