The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced plans to prohibit the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products in Ghana, effective January 1, 2027.

According to the EPA, the decision follows a policy announcement by President John Dramani Mahama on June 5, 2025, during World Environment Day. The President said phasing out styrofoam would support government efforts to reduce plastic pollution.

In a statement issued on May 25, 2026, the EPA said the ban would cover expanded polystyrene foam used for food packaging, disposable cups and plates, restaurant takeaway containers, and other consumer products.

The Authority noted that exemptions would apply to polystyrene products used for medical, scientific, and laboratory purposes, subject to approval.

Officials said the period before 2027 would be used for public education, stakeholder consultations, and preparations for enforcement. The EPA added that it would work with local assemblies, port authorities, and customs officials to implement the policy.

The public has been encouraged to adopt reusable and recyclable packaging alternatives.
