EOCO arrests Dennis Miracles Aboagye, NPP demands immediate release

Accra, Ghana
The Economic and Organised Crime Office, EOCO, has arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the NPP Communications Team. The arrest, which took place on Monday, has sparked strong reactions from the New Patriotic Party, with party leadership demanding his immediate release.
In a statement, the NPP described the arrest as unnecessary and politically motivated. The party said Mr. Aboagye was picked up without prior notice to his lawyers and family, and called on EOCO to follow due process in handling the matter.
“We demand the immediate release of Dennis Miracles Aboagye. Due process must be respected at all times, and no citizen should be subjected to arbitrary arrest,” the statement said.
Party executives at the national and regional levels have since gathered at EOCO’s headquarters to demand clarity on the reasons for the arrest. Some senior party members argued that the move could undermine public confidence in state institutions if it is not properly explained.
Sources within EOCO indicated that Mr. Aboagye is assisting with investigations into matters relating to financial transactions and communications during his previous role in government. However, the Office is yet to issue an official statement detailing the specific charges or allegations.
Legal practitioners say that while EOCO has the mandate to investigate economic crimes, it must ensure that suspects are treated fairly and given access to legal representation.
The arrest has dominated political discussions on radio and social media, with supporters of the NPP calling it an attack on the party’s communicators. Some members have organized to hold a press conference later in the week to outline their position and next steps.
Civil society groups have also weighed in, urging EOCO to be transparent about the basis of the arrest and to avoid any perception of selective justice. They stressed that fighting corruption must be done within the bounds of the law to maintain public trust.
Mr. Aboagye remains in EOCO custody as of the time of filing this report. His lawyers are expected to meet with investigators in the coming hours.
The National Secretariat has assured party members that it is engaging the appropriate authorities to ensure a fair and timely resolution.
