The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called for an independent and transparent investigation into a military shooting incident that occurred at Kyebi Zongo over the weekend.

The incident reportedly left residents in fear and raised concerns about the use of force by security personnel in civilian areas. While details of what triggered the shooting remain unclear, eyewitnesses say there was a confrontation between some youth and military officers deployed to the area.

In a statement, Dr. Agyemang condemned any act that leads to harm or intimidation of civilians and said the matter must be treated with the urgency it deserves. “What happened at Kyebi Zongo is worrying. We need an independent, transparent probe to establish the facts, ensure accountability, and provide justice for all affected persons,” he said.

The MP added that security agencies have a duty to protect lives and property, but that duty must be carried out within the confines of the law and with respect for human rights. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with any investigation that will be instituted.

Community leaders in Kyebi Zongo have also appealed for calm while calling on the Ministry of Defense and the Ghana Armed Forces to explain the circumstances that led to the deployment and the shooting.

Some residents say the incident has heightened tension in the area and is affecting business activities. Others are demanding compensation for property damage and medical support for those who were affected.

Security analysts note that clear rules of engagement and better community engagement are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future. They argue that trust between the military and civilian populations is essential for effective security operations.

Dr. Agyemang assured constituents that he would follow up with the relevant national authorities to ensure the investigation is conducted and its findings made public. He also called on the media and civil society to monitor the process to guarantee transparency.

The Ghana Armed Forces is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
